Wordless/Wordful Wednesday - The Great Toy Clean Up of 2011

7:27 PM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

This last weekend we spent our time sorting through the toy madness that is our house.  It was an event I liked to refer to as The Great Toy Clean Up of 2011.  We have a hard time getting rid of toys because having all boys when one is finished playing with a toy usually the next one down the line will find it interesting - provided it makes it them all in one piece that is!

We made it a family event and insisted that all the boys participate.  Here are the pictures from the beginning of the process:

Half way through...

DONE! Until next year that is...

In total we got rid of tons of toys and filled up two huge moving boxes that are ready to be donated.  It feels so good to have the toys all neat and organized again!

Eat Chocolate Every Day with Nutrisystem!

12:06 AM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

It's not a secret that I love chocolate and I need a little chocolate boost to get me through the day sometimes.  One thing that I love about Nutrisystem is that if I wanted to I could have chocolate everyday.  Even I don't need it that much - but it's a great safety net for me just knowing that it's okay to have a sweet treat everyday.  There are so many chocolate options available that I thought I would share some of my personal favorites with you.

The delicious dessert pictured above is the fudge brownie, its a favorite of both myself and my husband.  One thing that I really like about the desserts is the diversity.  There are cakes, brownies, ice cream, bars, chocolates and more.  If you want to see every dessert that Nutrisystem offers you can view their dessert menu.  If you don't want to take my word for it that a dessert, or any other menu item for that matter, I mention is delicious you can see the ratings of the Nutrisystem community listed next to each dessert.  The ratings are based on a 5 star system so its very easy to tell right away what others think about that menu item.

Below are my favorite chocolate desserts
available on the Nutrisystem menu.

5 Great Ways to Decorate and Glamify Your Bed that will Turn Your Bedroom Into a Relaxing Retreat

12:49 AM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

The Master Bedroom is one room in the house that I love to retreat to.  I spend most of my quiet time there and its really important to me that the room, especially the bed, be inviting.  The bed serves as the focal point of most bedrooms so if you want to add some drama or dimension to a bedroom and you can't afford a full room makeover the bed is a great place to start.  Here are some great tips that will help you to dress up your bed and add some instant glam to any bedroom retreat.

  1. Headboards can set the tone for the entire bedroom.  I have a king headboad, that is part of my canopy bed.  It's got great height, texture and pattern.  If your don't have a headboard this will be one thing that you will definitely want to turn any bed into a relaxing retreat.  There are many styles and options out there.  If you are short on storage space or want to eliminate nightstands a bookcase headboard is a great option.  My personal favorite is a padded headed board.  They can be made to look elegant or simple but either way they are comfortable!  If you can't afford to buy one they are also relatively easy to make if you happen to be a bit crafty.  I found a great DIY article on the HGTV website.  If you are like me though, the thought of creating padded headboards for king size bed seems a little daunting.  I would rather purchase one but if you can't afford your dream headboard than making one yourself is a fantastic alternative.
  2. Buy a new comforter and accessorize with high quality throw pillows.  I tend to stay away from the bed in a bag sets because they can make your bed look dated.  However, you can class it up with a new comforter and throw pillows.  Varying shapes, color and textures can add great dimension and depth to any bed.  You can use the pillows to draw out subtle colors in the comforter or tie in other fabrics or wall paint in the room.  Gorgeous comforters and throw pillows are very reasonably priced at discount stores like Ross and TJ Maxx if you are on a budget.
  3. Add a canopy or netting above the bed.  I love the look of a canopy bed.  They are so elegant and can be done in a million different ways.  I personally own a simple dark wood canopy bed but one thing I have yet to do is add fabric to it, right now its just an open design.  Adding a canopy can be achieved in many ways and whether you want something dramatic or simple and understated there is no doubt that it will change the entire look of your bedroom.  Some ideas are: adding a simple mosquito netting above draping it overhead, screwing four hooks above the bed and hanging a length of fabric or affixing curtain rods to the ceiling and adding gorgeous draperies.  For examples check out this great post on the Interior and Architectures blog.
  4. Cover up the boxsprings!  Covering up the box springs is a really simple fix to an otherwise obvious eyesore.  Bed skirts can easily cover up that awful fabric and keep with the flow of the colors used in the room or on the bed.  There are also different types of bed skirts to choose from as well including straight, pleated or ruffled that will dress up your bed.  One alternative to bed skirts that I have adopted is a fitted sheet.  For my bed the canopy rails on the bottom of the bed frame are a beautiful part of the design and I don't want a skirt to distract from it.  I came up with the idea to put a fitted sheet over the box springs and it created a sleek, modern and simple way to hide the hideous pattern on what had been disgracing my otherwise beautiful bed.
  5. Adjust the height of your bed.  The height of a bed can dramatically change the look of a bedroom.  If your bed is on a metal frame you can add risers to make it taller.  You can also reduce the height by getting rid of the frame and replacing it with a lower platform for the bed to rest on.  The use of a platform reduces the need for a box spring so that too will lower the height of the bed.  No matter what way you go, up or down, it will definitely make a difference in the look and style of your bedroom.

Aloha Friday - Coke or Pepsi

7:42 PM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

[alohafriday.jpg]

Aloha Fridays are brought to you by Kailani from An Island Life. Over there in Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So Kailani thought that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting, too. So, for Aloha Friday, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Answer my question and put one of your own up on your blog. Link up and check out other blogs that participate at An Island Life.

Coke or Pepsi?

Moving to a small town I would have never thought that the soft drink choices would be so limited!  Every independently owned business only offers Pepsi products.  The only place I can get a Coke is if I drive thru McDonalds or Taco Time - don't even get me started on how vastly different Taco Time is here in Oregon as compared to Washington.  I find it really odd that every restaurant in these parts only serves Pepsi.  However, I have always been a Coke girl myself.  I have to admit that I have been drinking one Pepsi product in particular by the gallon lately and that is only in an effort to cut calories.  My new vice is Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry.  It's the best diet, 0 calorie soft drink I can find.

So my heart is with Coke but I'm slowly succumbing to the mistress of Pepsi....

The Review

Photobucket

I have had the pleasure of reviewing D-Link Systems DCS-932L mydlink-Enabled Wireless N Day/Night Home Network Camera for the last few weeks.  It has been awesome to be able to use this cool device.  This is one that mom will love just as much as dad - which I think are the best Father's Day gifts in my opinion! I am the first one to admit that I am not the most tech savvy.  So I was a bit worried when I had to figure out how to get the camera set up.  Luckily it was pretty easy and I had my camera up and running in about ten minutes.

I think that the hardest part was trying to figure out just where to put the camera so it had the best vantage point.  I love the idea of screwing it to a wall or the ceiling but since I plan on moving it from room to room at times I wanted it to be more mobile than affixed to something.  If I had more than one though I would be definitely utilizing that feature.  After much deliberation I found a perfect spot in my dining area that overlooks the spot that the boys play the most.

It was so cool to see the live feed in action for the first time.  Right away I decided to download the mydlink apps to my iPod touch and my droid phone.  The photo above is of the live feed streaming on my iPod while using the mydlink app.  On the iPod the live feed looked perfect, no lag time or anything.  On my droid phone there was a delay - like I was watching the feed two minutes in the past.  So for me, the experience was way better on my iPod but unless I have access to a wireless network the app won't work, where as my droid phone always works.  The delay isn't always there so I'm pretty sure that it has to do with the speed of my cell phone and not the app itself.

Either way I totally love having the app on both devices, as well as having access to the live feed.  When I am in my room watching TV or blogging and I hear the boys getting rowdy down the hall, or even if I just want to spy because things are too quiet, I don't have to get up I just need to use my dlink app or open a new tab on my laptop and sign on.  It's awesome!

Another great feature is that you can take a picture of the live feed, so if you see something that you want a picture of its available at the touch of a button.  I like that it has the night vision on it too.  My house is pretty bright but I like to keep the shutters closed for the most part.  The camera is so sensitive to the light in my house that most of my feed is seen using the night vision.  When I open the shutters and let more light in it gets live feed in color.  I also am really happy that I can hear what is going on in the feed as well as see it.

Below is a great video that explains way better than I ever could just how the camera works - check it out!

This Would Be Great To Use For:

  • Working parents can view the kids from work
  • Mom and Dad to view a newborn baby in their room - day or night
  • Mom and Dad to check on the nanny or babysitter
  • Relatives over seas in the military can view what their family is doing
  • Security monitoring
  • Pet owners can use it to check on their animals

Wordless/Wordful Wednesday - My Little Potato Head!

6:20 PM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

The other night my husband and I were in the middle of a conversation when somebody tugged on my leg to get our attention. When we looked Emilio was standing there and exclaimed, "Mommy, Daddy look! I got glasses!"

That little ham was wearing Mr. Potato Head's glasses! It was too cute and I just had to take a few pics.

At first glance though he totally reminds me of that kid from Jerry Maguire.  you know, the one that says, "The human head weighs 8 lbs!".  Am I right?

Do You Have A Dedicated Home Office or Work Space?

1:59 AM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

Long ago, before children, I had a dedicated home office.  For what, I don't really know because all I really did was pay bills in it.  I didn't work from home but for some reason I thought that it was just a necessity within a home.  Eventually the home office became home office/guest room and then upon the arrival of my third child there was no office.  Just an L shaped desk in my garage - covered with tons of files, papers and craft supplies.

I don't know why but I love an L shaped desk.  Mine was a beauty too.  It was beat up a bit but I think I loved it because it was a corner desk with hutch - and the hutch was removable so I could put on either side of the desk.  I think most of all I really like a lot of space to spread out when I work.  It brings me back to the days when I had a real day job, in an office, with other people.

Originally I moved to the garage because I was going to have the garage act as my home office.  Shortly thereafter I realized that all though this idea was great in theory it wasn't very realistic because I just couldn't find the time to get my blogging done and watch my kids at the same time.  So it became my bill paying desk once again and I was on the look out for a new desk that was small and would fit in the corner of my family room, in a teensy weensy spot.

The one I chose was very, very simple and luckily for me I found it on Craigslist for only $40.  It was a great desk but not my ideal.  My ideal tiny corner credenza desk had a hutch that had a place to store the printer and other things.  Unfortunately the one that I loved was one inch too big to fit into the space that I needed it to.  I must admit that my $40 CL find was pretty awesome and it did the job. I finally had a dedicated workspace that was adjacent to where the kids played.

My set up was perfect - while it lasted.  Shortly after its conception I found out we were moving.  We were forced to downsize when we moved because the homes available to rent in the town we now live in were all very tiny.  There weren't any large houses to choose from and because my husband was starting work immediately we didn't have time to sit around and wait for one.  Here is a picture of my beloved desk, all cleaned up, ready to go for its new owner.

So when we moved I lost my office space completely.  Our garage was jam packed with the rest of our stuff that wouldn't fit in our new house so regrettably I had to sell my favorite L shaped desk.  My CL desk I kept but its completely dismantled and behind storage racks in the garage.  I am now reduced to blogging on my laptop in my bed on a laptop desk meant for college kids that are living in a dorm.  It's a far cry from the home office that I enjoyed so long ago.

I have boxes in the garage filled with items that belong in a home office yet I have no office.  I was trying to set up my dining room table, also in the garage, as a large executive type desk but that can only happen when we reorganize the garage.  So far I'm still waiting for that day to come.  Knowing my husband, hell may freeze over before it ever gets done.  So let's just say I'm not holding my breath that I will have a dedicated work space anytime soon.

Don't get me wrong, writing in bed can have its perks.  I get to watch my favorite shows, hang out with my pillow a lot and I am spending more time with my husband at night.  It still counts if he's snoring right?  But there are a few downsides to this too.  I have no where to keep my pens, paper, review items, etc...  Posts take forever to write because I have to watch tv too which is really distracting but super addictive.  Not to mention my butt and back are killing me, my posture is a wreck!  And I have to listen to my husband snoring.

Bottom line is that I need a home office.  It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.  I love office stuff.  I have a kajillion calendars, post its, pens, etc... and no where to put them!  I could go nuts in an office store looking at all the cool stuff available to accessorize my home office.  I am counting down the days until I can have a dedicated home office once again.  A private WAHM space, a kid-free zone, a me time zone.

Do you have a home office?  Is it important to you that you have a dedicated space or can you just take your laptop anywhere an be happy?  Do you love office stuff?  Are you like me, where the thought of an Office Depot shopping spree gets you all excited?  Or maybe you think I'm nuts!

American Idol Season Ten Finalists - Scotty McCreery VS. Lauren Alaina

12:06 AM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

I have been following American Idol this season each week and I am so sad to see it come to an end.  In my first post I wrote about this season's top 12 I predicted that Haley would go home and Pia would be the next American Idol.  Obviously I was way off base!

I was really glad that Haley got a chance to stay because as each week went on I really liked and I love her growling raspy tone.  I was really hoping that she would make it to the finale and I was sad to see her go.  I hope that she comes out with a great original album and makes it big one day.

So that leaves us with Scotty vs. Lauren in the finale.  Which to be honest, I was kind of shocked by.  I didn't think that Lauren did as well as Haley even though she is probably the better singer of the two.  Her youth is at times a bit annoying and well, she doesn't seem that comfortable in her own skin yet.  She is the youngest American Idol finalist to date which, in it of itself is an accomplishment.

Scotty, now, he's not much older because he is only 17.  He has been a fan favorite from the beginning.  I love his voice but his cheesy facial expressions are so silly.  It's like he is so full of himself, which I am certain that he is just trying to play the moment up, but it just comes off like he's cocky.  That being said though, I know that these are things that he can work on and I wouldn't be surprised if he became the next Garth or even George Straight.  Both of whom I love.

Actually Scotty reminds me of a boy I went to high school with.  Gangly, skinny and not manly looking - very boyish.  At my ten year reunion I ran into that same skinny kid and he had really grown up and looked like a man now.  A cool, working for the CIA, rich and now even good looking man.  He revealed to me that he had a crush on me in high school and wanted to take me to the prom but was too shy to ask.  If only I had known then what I know now - life might have turned out a bit differently...

Scotty reminds of that kid I knew and I can't help but think that Scotty could probably get any girl in his high school now that he wants.  I bet that the girl that turned him down just six months ago is probably kicking herself now.  Anyways, I digress...

Well I think that as soon as Ryan Seacrest read the results of last weeks vote we all knew that Scotty will be the next American Idol.  I think if he went up against Haley it would have been a tighter competition because they have such different genres of music and singing styles that appeal to their fans.  Two country artists though?  Lauren doesn't stand a chance.

Even though I know who the winner will be I still can't wait for the final round of the competition.  I love watching the judges and hearing the song choices for each contestant is always fun.  I think that because it will be their last performances of the season that they will both just have as much fun with it as they can.

So cheese on Scotty, cheese on!  I can't wait to see where your career goes from here.

Is it okay to say that I still miss Pia though?

Do You Spend Quality Time One On One With Your Children?

2:33 AM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

Being a stay at home mom I spend tons of time with my children - too much at times.  I must admit though I hardly ever get quality one on one time with my kids.  In part because I don't want to hurt the other two's feelings if I single one of them out.  I want them to all feel loved equally by mommy.  I know that its important to spend one on one time with them but another reason that I think it's been tough is because they are all boys and they like the same things for the most part.  I think that its easier for parents that have a boy and girl because there are gender based activities that can help with the singular quality time and its more likely that a boy wouldn't be jealous of girl related activities and vice versa.

Well last night I finally got my chance to spend one on one time with my middle son, Benji.  We both LOVE pizza and its something that both of us could eat every day.  I wanted to try a pizza place by our house for dinner and nobody but Benji wanted to go so I figured that this was my perfect opportunity to go on my first Mother-Son date with my six year old.  Something that we have talked about doing for awhile now.

To my surprise my oldest was happy to stay home while his brother and I went out and the little one was sleeping, so it was perfect.  Benji was really excited and so was I.  As I started getting ready to go I admit, I had a mini panic attack.  What if we didn't have anything to talk about?  What if he was bored hanging out with his mom?  Normally there are three other people joining in on the conversation at any given moment - would I be entertaining enough on my own?  I didn't want him to bring his DSi, our normal quieting distraction in restaurants, because I wanted this time to talk and to bond.  I decided to have him bring his new I Spy book because he loves searching for the items with me and it would be a great chance to do it without anyone chiming in.

Then we were off.  We ended up being the last customers of the night in the pizza place, in fact, we were the only customers in the entire place.  I hadn't been there before so I didn't know what to expect.  After we were seated we got to searching in the I Spy book, which Benji was excited about.  It was a great way to pass the time while we waited for our pizza to come to the table.  And it doubled as a great way for us to work on Benji's reading skills.

Finally the pizza came and we put the book away.  It was time to talk.  Of all of our kids Benji has had the hardest time with our recent move so I wanted to talk to him about his feelings.  I asked him if he had been making friends at school and he told me that we wasn't.  Which I happen to know is a bit of a fib.  I told him that I found a note from a friend of his that said Benji was his best friend.  Benji denies having any real friends.  While he was scarfing down his pizza he told me that he was afraid to make new friends because he didn't want to forget the old ones.

My heart melted.

He is so sweet and I told him that in life you will meet many people and make many friends.  You will never forget the ones that mean the most to you, no matter how far away you are from them.  They are always in your heart.  I reassured him that its important to make new friends and he definitely wouldn't want to miss out on new friendships and his old friends wouldn't want him to either.

He also shared with me that he thought I spent way too much time on the computer and he hated trying to get my attention sometimes.  We had a well overdue talk about my blog and what it means to me and our family.  He seemed to be understanding - as much as a six year old can be that is.  His comments reminded me that I needed to be more aware of my computer time and how it affects my kids.  I do make the boys wait when I am on the computer and they are demanding things from me, like I'm their short order cook/maid, because I think its rude.  I guess I didn't see that from their perspective I am being rude to them just by being on the computer in general sometimes.  I think we both learned a lot from this conversation.

After those few serious moments we got right back to the business of being silly again.  Benji loves to joke around and it was nice to see him smile.  We got our pizza boxed up and headed home but not before we stopped for some M&M's and chocolate milk.

Overall it was a really great experience for me.  And Benji from what he told me anyways...  I can't believe that I was nervous about not having anything to talk about with my kid.  I am glad that my fears were unfounded.

I told him that it was a lot of fun for me and that the next time I will take his older brother and then he and I can go out again.  Benji then asked, "Well what if he doesn't want to go with you?".  Then I asked him if he thought that his big brother would turn me down and he said "Yes!".  So maybe I'm not such a great date after all?  Not to toot my own horn or anything but I have a sneaking suspicion that he only said it because he knows that if his brother chooses to default on his turn with me then it's right back to him again. He's a smart little cookie.

I think that I will be making more of an effort to take my boys out independently from now on.  I just need to get my head around that what we do doesn't have to be spectacularly fun and that a trip to the grocery store or the library can be just as great as long as its time well spent talking.

How do you spend independent quality time with your kids?  Do you have to deal with jealousy issues?  Tell me please!

Betty Crocker Loaded Mashed Potatoes Review and Prize Pack Giveaway

9:45 PM Posted by Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma

Weeknights can be crazy sometimes and when it gets a little bit hectic you will take all the help you can get!  We all want to be able to serve amazing dinners that look complex, taste great but don't require slaving all day in the kitchen.  So sometimes we need to take shortcuts.  One fast and easy short cut is substituting Betty Crocker "Loaded Mashed" potatoes for a loaded baked potato.

I LOVE baked potatoes with the works, its one of my favorite sides.  There are times that I just don't have time to prepare them, and mashed?  Forget it.  The time it takes boil the water, slice the potatoes, add all the extras just takes way too long sometimes if you need to get dinner on the table in a hurry.

I recently tried Betty Crocker "Loaded Mashed" potatoes and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to have great tasting instant mashed potatoes in a flash.  I usually am not an instant potato kind of girl but when short on time its a great substitute.  I liked the loaded flavor because that is exactly how I love my potatoes if I were to make them fresh.

With a taste that is just like homemade, new Betty Crocker “Loaded Mashed” potatoes are made with 100% real russet potatoes, and a blend of real seasonings and natural flavors like bacon, cheese, chives, and sour cream.

Add Betty Crocker flavored mashed potatoes to your favorite recipe for an ideal addition to any dinner-time dish. With nine tasty varieties to choose from, like Four Cheese and Sweet Potato, and a great value price, Betty Crocker flavored mashed potatoes are the perfect go-to side dish for your favorite meals.
