Aloha Friday - Swear Words

Aloha Fridays are brought to you by Kailani from An Island Life. Over there in Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So Kailani thought that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting, too. So, for Aloha Friday, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Answer my question and put one of your own up on your blog. Link up and check out other blogs that participate at An Island Life.

Do you use made up swear words in front of your kids?

Unfortunately I have a sailors mouth. Something that I have had to phase out a bit since I have had children. There is just something about hearing your kids swear that just sounds totally wrong, in which I have had first hand experience. I know its not lady like to swear but its such a hard habit for me to break. One of the things that I do around my kids is to replace real cuss words with miscellaneous words. For example, the S word is replaced with snap and the F word is replaced with frick or frack, depending on whatever comes out first. I have noticed my oldest copying and frick is definitely in his vocabulary. He does know what the real words are, but he also knows not to say them too, thankfully! So, that is why my question is: do you use made up swear words in front of your kids?

My kids are homeschooled and have never heard swear words so they will think things that aren't swear words at all, are. The other day my ten-year-old was all worried over "For Pete's Sake". He thought it was swearing. No, no, that one's Ok.

I don't swear much and never around the kids. However, my husband could use a few made-up words. :-)

No, but I use made-up words and phrases to insult strangers (mainly bad drivers).
I don't know about swearing in front of kids, but I do like to make up random words when the mood calls for it.
My favorite: Shitaki mushroom =]

I've never been much for swearing, but kids can pick up words they hear at school or even in town. Most the time they don't know they're swearing until they're told not to say that anymore.

I do not swear often and not badly. My kids are teens so I do not think of it much. I am sure I censored myself when they were little.

I have started censoring myself, but my husband's language is filth.
I try not to swear, but sometimes it slips out!

I cuss some. When the kids were super young I cussed a bit less. I have to be careful at work to not cuss LOL.

I don't swear in front of my kids... I do say things like "darn it!" though.

I don't swear much and am glad that my hubby doesn't as well. We are pretty darn(!!!) careful not to say much of anything questionable in front of them as they are like little parrots.

I can see it getting trickier as they get older....LOL!

I have never sworn in front of the kids. I guess I always used words like crap, shoot, darn, etc.

I used to be a sailor too. It is hard to outgrow. It's the way everyone speaks in my country.

But now with children, I edit myself.

sometimes oh crap still comes out if it's really bad, but I try to cut it out too.

I guess I don't swear, but the c and the damn will come out.

I don't have my own kids but I work at a school. Fudgesicles used to come out all the time...but I've gotten pretty used to censoring myself now.

I have a potty mouth. It is so bad to do and I want to stop. I would rather stop than make up words I guess. I should no one or the other!

Yes I do. I try not to swear at all anyways since i dont' believe it is right to. But if I get really frustrated I will say things like "durn" or "snap!" (thanks my name is earl!) I am have to watch it or my little girl will be saying "crap" like I do ..... and i don't want that

I am lol after our conversation outside at the bus stop this morning. Kimberly is my neighbor and there were 3 of us moms talking about this very subject. I personally don't swear in front of the kids. I am not perfect and have slipped out a bad word here and there. For the most part I don't though.
Farkle is my favorite but normally it's pretty clean around here.

Well, now that you mention it, my husband and I have been trying not to even stay stupid or dumb around our son... so any 'colorful' language we use, we mouth it to each other! LOL!
I try not too swear too much anyway, but when the kids were little I would try and censor myself from using the "bad" words. I would use words that were made-up, like "finajima" or "fatsitutsi". Or if I started to say something I would draw it out and say something like "oh sugarsnaps" or "shiney-toes". It would make the kids and I laugh.
