How To Train Your Dragon Nintendo DS Game Review

Last week for Benji's Birthday we took him and Oscar to go see Dreamworks How To Train Your Dragon at the theater. It was a special birthday treat, for not just him but all of us. We love all of the Dreamworks movies and eagerly anticipated the release of their latest film. Once again, Dreamworks did not disappoint. It was a great storyline and kept me interested from start to finish. I loved the movie and so did my husband and the kids. Which is why my sons (and my husband) were more than thrilled to find out that they would be reviewing the How To Train Your Dragon Game for the Nintendo DS.

Game Description

The How to Train Your Dragon video game starts as the player puts themselves in the shoes of a Viking hero who is trying to become the ultimate dragon trainer. Gamers have the option of playing the game as "Hiccup" or "Astrid", on the Island of Berk, which features different game play options as compared to the locations that are highlighted in the movie including Vikings' Village, Wild Zone, Training Zone and Fight Arena. While enjoying the wonderful game play gamers learn to train dragons, explore different areas of the Island of Berk and Dragon fight their way to becoming the Viking hero. Gamers can also battle friends and family in head to head multi-player combat.

Game Features

Create Your Very Own Dragon - This feature allows players to create and customize six different types of dragons. The combinations are only as limited as the players imagination. You can pick dragon color, shape of tail, shape of feet, shape of wing, spikes, teeth, etc... You can also upgrade armor for the dragons by winning materials during battles which allows you to forge a piece of armor, examples are: breastplates, helmets and tailguards. The process of building your armor is fun too because it goes through five different tasks and depending how well you complete the task will determine how good, or not so good, the quality of your armor is.

Train Your Dragon For Battle - You can "Level Up" your dragon's speed, power, fire and other abilities through intense training in order to become the ultimate dragon trainer. The more battles you win the deeper into the story you go, thus earning you more trained dragons. Then you can use your arsenal of trained dragons to battle friends in a variety of unique environments.

Pick Up Where the Movie Left Off - Players can enjoy a post movie adventure by jumping into the game play as their favorite characters. Players can further explore the beautiful Island of Berk as either Hiccup or Astrid in Adventure Mode or experience the battle action in Arena Mode while you fight for the coveted title of Ultimate Dragon Warrior.

Head-to-Head Multiplayer Mode - With Arcade Mode it allows friends to select their dream team of four individually customized dragons or dragons chosen from the arcade roster and then jump into head-to-head battle with each other. In multi-player mode additional characters are playable including Tuffnut T., Ruffnut T., Fishlegs and Snotlout.

Mini Games - (my personal favorite) Mini Games include Ice Sculpting, Looping Race, Flying Sheppard, Memory Torch and Puzzle Dragon. If players excel in mini games they earn experience points toward leveling up their dragon. Winning gold and other items help the player care for their dragons.

Our Panel of Experts

Both my oldest son and my husband agree that How to Train Your Dragon is an extremely fun game to play. My middle son hasn't gotten the chance to play it yet because my oldest doesn't want to hand it over to him until he has beaten the game. I know that he thinks its great because on Monday we had to deal with a scheduled power outage and this game kept him solidly entertained for over four hours. He was having a blast exploring the Island of Berk and learning how to customize his dragon. One of my son's friends came over and played it too. They all three sat together on the couch passing the DSi back and forth for at least thirty minutes while they discussed the game play and enjoyed actually playing the game. Even my husband sat and played it for almost two hours straight the first time he played it. His favorite parts were learning the techniques to forging better armor for your dragon and learning how to add more dragons to his arsenal of trained dragons.

After my son had been playing the game for over two hours on the first day he received it I decided to give him a quick mini interview to share his opinion about the game. I also recorded him playing the game as well. He is only 6 so his answers are very brief but mainly because he wanted to stop talking and get back to playing the game.
