October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  We hear about breast cancer all the time but during the month of October the specific goal is to not only empower and educate women but also help them recognize the resources available to them if they are diagnosed with breast cancer.  It is extremely important to give yourself regular self-breast exams so that you can identify any changes, schedule regular mammograms with your healthcare provider, adhere to prescribed treatment and know the facts about recurrence.

My grandmother, who is 88 years old, is a breast cancer survivor.  I remember when my parents told me.  I was scared for her and what she was going through.  Thankfully my grandma caught it in its early stages and was able to overcome it.  I am proud to say that she has been cancer free for several years now.

I was only in high school when my grandma was diagnosed.  It took a few years for the reality to set in that I too could be at risk for breast cancer.  I now make it a point to check myself regularly and get my annual breast exam.  Seeing as the possibility is there I want to make sure that if I ever have breast cancer that I can detect it early, just as my grandma did.  Early detection makes all the difference.

It can seem a little overwhelming to hear so much about breast cancer during October, but there's no doubt the increased awareness has made a tremendous difference in fighting this disease.

We've put together our own collection of pink office supplies at Shoplet, and we're excited to see how many companies are on board with their own products to support BCAM.

Thanks for the post!
