Another VTech V.Reader Giveaway! Ends FRIDAY!!

My boys have really been enjoying their VTech V.Reader, Benji especially. (If you missed my first post about the V.Reader you can check it out here) He is five and just really getting into this whole reading thing. Being that my boys are so competitive its not a secret that Benji really wants to know how to read because he is feeling left out of something that his big brother can do. One reason that the V.Reader is seeing so much use is that it lets Benji feel like he has cracked the reading code. Obviously he knows that he's not reading like his brother does but it really helps boost his confidence and I love to see him so excited to be a part of it.

One thing that really excites me about the V.Reader is the story mode. Benji has a speech delay and it is a huge worry for me that he will have trouble learning to read because he sounds out words differently than he should. When you sound words out incorrectly it can lead to trouble not only with reading but spelling as well. In story mode he can look at the words and hear them being read to him at the same time. I also love that in game mode he can learn to spell some of the key words used in the story too.

I went upstairs to check on the boys after I sent them to bed and snapped this cute photo of Benji, sneaking in some extra time with his V.Reader.

How Do You Encourage You Kids To Read?

VTech is asking parents to encourage their children to read as much as they can this summer by taking the VTech Summer Reading Pledge. VTech will be giving away a Vtech V.Reader to the first 100 moms or dads to sign up for the pledge!

What We Do To Encourage Reading at Our House

  • We have a calendar that we mark off each day that the kids spend time reading. If they have read every day for the entire month they are rewarded with a family trip to Chuck E. Cheese.
  • Oscar is really motivated by chapter books, because it sounds cooler, so we like to make fun paper bookmarks for him to mark the pages where he leaves off.
  • Oscar reads to his little brothers to be a good role model for them. The younger ones want to do whatever the older one is doing so that in itself is a great motivator.
  • When driving around I like to point out signs for Oscar to read or ask Benji to recognize letters that are in his name.

My daughter is only 3, but I have been reading to her at bed time since she was a baby. She loves her special reading time with mommy. I also like to take her to the library and let her pick out her own books. It keeps things fresh to have new books to read every few weeks, and she loves picking out books she wants to read.

We do several things with our 10 year old son, who hates to read. We offer rewards if he meets certain goals. For example, this summer we told him if he reads either 20 shorter or less involved books, like Garfield, Captain Underpants, etc, or 5 heavy duty chapter books by the end of the summer, we would take him to King's Dominion, an amusement park in my area. We also encourage him to read to his 6 month old sister. He was an only child for almost 10 years and really enjoys being a big brother and wants to teach her things and be a good role model for her. So the little boy who hated reading has begun to enjoy it!

Thanks for the chance!

Read books that match your child's interests.
If she's into frogs, go to the library together and find books(fiction & nonfiction) with frogs. If he's into rockets, look for space books etc.
Since mine have multiple interests. We pick a new theme about once a week. So go to the library at least once a week in the summer.

Another reading tip: Even after your children learn to read, read to them.
If you read chapter books to them that are a level or two above what they are learning, they will become interested in them and want to read them when they are able.

Reading tip: Start reading a book series together.
For example, the Boxcar Mysteries or the Matt Christopher Sports books. If they like the first one, they will want to read more in the series by that author!

Reading tip: Give gift cards to book stores as presents...kids love being able to make their own choices and you get the bonus of a math lesson cause they can't spend more than the amount on the card.

Books need to come to life. Read a story about the zoo at the zoo. Make the pages come to life visually, like go to a baseball game if the story is about baseball. Make the sense come alive if the story is about food like ice cream go to a ice cream parlor. Live the story.

katklaw777 said…
Reading tip: Let them read in unexpected places...in a tent or under the covers with a flashlight, in a hammock hung outside or in the basement. If they are older in the bathtub or laying on a raft in the pool.
katklaw777 said…
Reading tip: Set an example, if you make time for reading so will they. I leave books for myself and the kids everywhere...in the bathroom, in the car, on the coffee table etc.
katklaw777 said…
Reading tip: Give them a special quiet reading spot. A bean bag chair in the corner of their room or the family room is a good example.

I try to make reading fun in lots of ways, lately we take a fun walk to the library and let the kids choose books to borrow...they love it! I also encourage them by reading to them throughout the day and also doing themes with other activities related to the book, like green eggs and ham, etc. fun!

tip:
always take at least a few books when you go on a trip. my kids love bedtime stories and even when we're on vacation its a big part of their bedtime routine.

tip:

I sometimes read bath themed books while my daughter is in the tub! Its fun for her and more reading time!

tip:

keep totes with about 10 books in each in several different areas of the house. If the books are easily accessible my kids just pick them up and read throughout the day.

We go to the library once a week so the kids can pick out books and then we take turns reading them at night. It's a way for my kids to get "new" books often.
