Another VTech V.Reader Giveaway! Ends FRIDAY!!

My boys have really been enjoying their VTech V.Reader, Benji especially. (If you missed my first post about the V.Reader you can check it out here) He is five and just really getting into this whole reading thing. Being that my boys are so competitive its not a secret that Benji really wants to know how to read because he is feeling left out of something that his big brother can do. One reason that the V.Reader is seeing so much use is that it lets Benji feel like he has cracked the reading code. Obviously he knows that he's not reading like his brother does but it really helps boost his confidence and I love to see him so excited to be a part of it.

One thing that really excites me about the V.Reader is the story mode. Benji has a speech delay and it is a huge worry for me that he will have trouble learning to read because he sounds out words differently than he should. When you sound words out incorrectly it can lead to trouble not only with reading but spelling as well. In story mode he can look at the words and hear them being read to him at the same time. I also love that in game mode he can learn to spell some of the key words used in the story too.

I went upstairs to check on the boys after I sent them to bed and snapped this cute photo of Benji, sneaking in some extra time with his V.Reader.

How Do You Encourage You Kids To Read?

VTech is asking parents to encourage their children to read as much as they can this summer by taking the VTech Summer Reading Pledge. VTech will be giving away a Vtech V.Reader to the first 100 moms or dads to sign up for the pledge!

What We Do To Encourage Reading at Our House

  • We have a calendar that we mark off each day that the kids spend time reading. If they have read every day for the entire month they are rewarded with a family trip to Chuck E. Cheese.
  • Oscar is really motivated by chapter books, because it sounds cooler, so we like to make fun paper bookmarks for him to mark the pages where he leaves off.
  • Oscar reads to his little brothers to be a good role model for them. The younger ones want to do whatever the older one is doing so that in itself is a great motivator.
  • When driving around I like to point out signs for Oscar to read or ask Benji to recognize letters that are in his name.

My tip for getting my 11 YO to read is to read the same book she does, and then talk about it with her afterward. We keep each other motivated to keep reading, and the little 'book group' is fun!

My tip is to show your chid that reading is not work. Both me and my husband read and we make sure that we read with our two sons every night. We encourage them to participate by asking them to read a sentence we just read or for the little on to point to something on the page. So far they both love it.

Reading tip - I let my kids stay up for an extra 10 minutes at night to read in bed. It gets them reading, gets them interested in their books, and I have found that they are more likely to choose to read other times during the day. entry 1

Reading tip - when a movie comes out that is based on a book, agree to take the kids to the movie, or rent the movie, AFTER they read the book. We all know that the movie is never as good as the book! Encouraging children to read the book first will enable them to see that the book is better, and they will be more likely to choose books. entry 1

Reading tip - be involved! We all read books with our pre-readers, but what about our independent readers? Every once in a while, I'll pick up the book my son is working on reading, and read it. Then I know what he is interested in, where his reading interests lie, and he loves it that he can talk about the story with me. Plus, every eight year old thinks it's cool if his mom knows about Pokemon!

Reading tip - set up a "listening center," with a tape/cd player, books, the audio version of the books, and headphones. You can even record yourself reading the books for the audio version! My kids love this, and we put it away as soon as they start using it less frequently so that we can bring it back a month later -- then it is "new" again!

Reading tip - help your children make their own books about favorite family stories. Have the kids do all the illustrations, bind it together however you choose, list the children as authors and illustrators, and add it to your library! The kids love reading "true stories" about themselves and their families. This is also a great way to preserve those family moments that we tend to forget...

Reading tip - older children can make ABC books for younger children. Encourage them to choose things that the younger children enjoy to use in the books. "M" might be for "mirror," if the book is for a baby who loves to see him/herself in the mirror. This is great ABC practice for beginning readers, and the younger children will have a personalized ABC book to learn from!

Reading tip - planning a family trip? Let the kids do the research! If you're planning to go to a zoo, show them the zoo website and let them read about where they'll be going and what they'll see. It is great reading practice, they learn research skills, and they'll probably learn things that even you don't know!

Read books to yourself where the children can see you. When you read to yourself, it shows children that reading is fun - and most children will respond to that by wanting to read themselves!
