Another VTech V.Reader Giveaway! Ends FRIDAY!!

My boys have really been enjoying their VTech V.Reader, Benji especially. (If you missed my first post about the V.Reader you can check it out here) He is five and just really getting into this whole reading thing. Being that my boys are so competitive its not a secret that Benji really wants to know how to read because he is feeling left out of something that his big brother can do. One reason that the V.Reader is seeing so much use is that it lets Benji feel like he has cracked the reading code. Obviously he knows that he's not reading like his brother does but it really helps boost his confidence and I love to see him so excited to be a part of it.

One thing that really excites me about the V.Reader is the story mode. Benji has a speech delay and it is a huge worry for me that he will have trouble learning to read because he sounds out words differently than he should. When you sound words out incorrectly it can lead to trouble not only with reading but spelling as well. In story mode he can look at the words and hear them being read to him at the same time. I also love that in game mode he can learn to spell some of the key words used in the story too.

I went upstairs to check on the boys after I sent them to bed and snapped this cute photo of Benji, sneaking in some extra time with his V.Reader.

How Do You Encourage You Kids To Read?

VTech is asking parents to encourage their children to read as much as they can this summer by taking the VTech Summer Reading Pledge. VTech will be giving away a Vtech V.Reader to the first 100 moms or dads to sign up for the pledge!

What We Do To Encourage Reading at Our House

  • We have a calendar that we mark off each day that the kids spend time reading. If they have read every day for the entire month they are rewarded with a family trip to Chuck E. Cheese.
  • Oscar is really motivated by chapter books, because it sounds cooler, so we like to make fun paper bookmarks for him to mark the pages where he leaves off.
  • Oscar reads to his little brothers to be a good role model for them. The younger ones want to do whatever the older one is doing so that in itself is a great motivator.
  • When driving around I like to point out signs for Oscar to read or ask Benji to recognize letters that are in his name.

My tip is to take them to the library as often as possible. Let them choose their own books, and when they are finished reading, head back to the library for new books. Thanks for the review and giveaway!

Another tip: Check for reading incentive programs in your area. We have a bank that will deposit $10 into a child's account when they read ten books. #1

My reading tip is for parents to model the behavior. I love to read and do so whenever I get the chance – not just after the kids go to bed. I think it is good for the kids to see me reading, when they see me they ask what my book is about and often go and grab a book and join me!

Another way I encourage my children to read is by having books throughout the house. Instead of simply having the children’s books on shelves in their bedrooms, we have books in their rooms, in the playroom, in our living room, and even our bedroom. I’m constantly surprised to see who has grabbed which book and is flipping through it. Now that my oldest son can read on his own, I will see him sitting from time to time reading favorite books from his younger days that we have left out for his little brother.

I also keep a small bag of books in the car that I change from time to time. With the number of swim lessons, baseball games, dance classes and so on that we go to, I am always waiting with one of my children for another to finish practice. Having a bag of books on hand helps pass the time and encourage them to read while we’re out.

We go to the library every week and I keep books in the car for my son as well. We always read before bed as well! Sometimes we set up a blanket under a tree in our backyard and we both read. I think it sets a good example for my son to see I like reading too!

I allow my children to choose their genre/topics to read. I remember my mom giving me books to read and when the topic didn't interest me, it was drudgery.

For older kids, read the same book as them and make it a "book club". Discuss it, make a night of it with snacks etc.

If my kids are into a particular subject (my oldest was stuck on firetrucks, firemen for a while), I search our library’s site for books on that subject. That way, they’re reading (listening) to a story they’re interested in and I’m happy they’re reading.

When my son reads an educational book (i.e one about dinosaurs, science, history, etc.), we take a field trip when he finishes it. We go to the science museum, police department, or wherever is relevant to what he's just read. That way, he gets to apply what he's learned and he has a great time. It also gives us great mommy son time.

We encourage reading by rotating our books. Rather than have all the books out at once, we have two crates of books out, and every few months, we rotate the books, keeping only a few favorites and bringing in ones that had previously been taken out. The kids are excited to see old favorites and ones they didn't remember. "New" book day is so much fun!

We go to the library every week and I let the kids pick out their own books. We keep it fun by having a theme each week. One week is was Firetrucks since we had just seen firetrucks in a parade, one week it was camping since we were just about to go on a camping trip. They have a lot of fun and learn more about what we are currently seeing and doing in our lives.

Reading tip - we go on "book searches" at our local thrift stores, like a treasure hunt. If the kids find good, quality books that they will read, we buy them. They like that they found the books themselves, and are excited to read them so that we can go back and search for more! The books are inexpensive, add to our library, and get passed down to the younger children in the family. entry 1

Reading tip - our children are busy, active kids who get up early (!) so they generally nap during the day until about age 5, when reading skills are really taking off. When I start to noice that they are outgrowing the nap, but still need a bit of rest time, we made a reading rest time container. The container has books, dry erase reading workbooks, ABC puzzles, and so forth. The kids are excited to not have to sleep and to have special things to do during "rest time" and they get a lot of practice with their reading skills! entry 1

When I start to noice that they are outgrowing the nap, but still need a bit of rest time, we made a reading rest time container. The container has books, dry erase reading workbooks, ABC puzzles, and so forth. The kids are excited to not have to sleep and to have special things to do during "rest time" and they get a lot of practice with their reading skills! entry 2

I've found that the best way to get my kids interested in reading is to read myself. When Aiden sees me reading he gets more interested in his own books and asks me to read one to him.

Reading tip - when we go on a walk, we'll pick a letter of the alphabet, and search for things on our walk that begin with that letter. We all get exercise, and the kids get reading skills practice! entry 1

Reading tip - let the kids make out the grocery list! Not only do they get practice with phonics, but the list is so incredibly cute! Grocery shopping is just more fun when you're reading your child's writing! entry 1

Reading tip - label your child's things. You'd be surprised at what a child will pick up on his/her own. If you label things, such as the crayon box, the toy containers, the shelves in the closet, kids will learn that crayons go in the box marked "crayons," and will associate the letters on the label with the words. The more they are exposed to reading, the better they are at it, even if you're not "teaching" them, but letting them learn on their own. Don't underestimate a child's ability to figure things out! entry 1

We got each child their own library card. They can have up to 10 books checked out at a time, but they have to read the ones they have before they can get new ones. They love checking out books, so they read every day.

I take my two boys to the library and let them pick out their own books every week. They just can't wait to get home and read.

I research topics that my children find interesting at the library, on the internet, and at home. We also discuss a major sports event in the news and follow it in the newspapers. We develop a scrapbook with articles and then discuss them.

I encourage my oldest nephew to read by telling him he needs to teach his little brother all about life through stories. He is always eager to grab a book off the shelf to read to little Noah. It's so sweet and they both love it!
